The Eastern Redbud, Cercis canadensis, is a small shrubby tree native to eastern North America from southern Ontario, Canada to northern Florida.

Redbuds grow well in rocky soil, including roadcuts and other disturbed locations. It is what we have instead of kudzu.

The redbud is called "spicewood tree" in some parts of southern Appalachia, where its green twigs are used as seasoning for wild game such as venison and opossum.
